Intro to Sarah and EDP
My name is Sarah Steck. I am a junior with a major in media studies and minors in marketing and EDP. This is the first EDP class I am taking, although I have a few friends who are EDP majors and have talked to me about it. However, I became interested in taking these classes when helping a friend find classes to help him pursue his interest in graphic design. This which lead me to research the EDP program and talk to my art professors about how it could be the best option from him, but also me.
I want to learn how to use the tool the produce digital art as I feel this will help me in my professional life while also being a creative outlet. Digital art is a medium I do not yet have much experience in, so I think taking classes to help me learn the foundations of how to produce it and also what I can do with it is a good place to start. I feel that my media studies major and marketing minor can work as a guideline to incorporating art into my career.
Funny enough, I actually am not a fan of social media, particularly after becoming a media studies major. I feel it has made me more cynical about its effectiveness, and where it is leading our society as a whole. I do not watch much tv or movies, however when I do I like cartoons the most. I would say in general I am more old school with my media consumption. for example I listen to CDs in my car and am resistance to technological changes that serve materialism or consumerism (like a new iPhone coming out every few months). However, I do love the use of media in the pursuit of art. I guess using media to critique society not run it.
Overall, my goals summed up would be exploring the impacts and use of EDP in society. I want to learn how I can incorporate EDP into my other academic interests. I want to learn about the use of technology in the past and issues or successes that may be repeated so I can apply these lessons to my own work in the future.

Good to meet you here, Sarah, and I'm excited to hear of your healthy skepticism of social media and what I think of as the "upgrade express train" that pressures us into constant purchases of new apps, new phones, and so on. I'm also interested in older technologies as a means of resisting this obsession with the "new," though I have my share of new things as well. I think it will be interesting for us to explore when refusing those technologies prevents us from participating in the world around us, as well as when those technologies and their developers prey upon our desire to be connected!
