Symone Williams- Davis Chapters 1 and 2

*This is posted late, I am aware and will face the consequences*

Chapter 1: I chose the rhetorical triangle as my artifact because it is how I learned to write persuasively in high school. I feel it symbolizes the evolution of writing and how it's come because there were many doors that writing opened. Written word cannot be fully explained through a triangle, but this shows the purpose of writing; which is a visual representation of phonetic combinations. Also writing was created to convey messages to others. It was created so many civilizations ago that we often take it for granted. We no longer appreciate writing in its simplest form because we have developed new technologies that we deem as more helpful.  Even by inventing the alphabet, societies were able to attach phonetic sounds to verbal representations. These verbal representations became essential to society and scripture. being able to convey thoughts visually was once a mysticism, and now it is a part of our daily lives. Thus, societies now depend on writing. This is an example of how much societies depend on the technology we create. Once these technologies come about, society submerges to its abilities rather than control it. Writing was once a communicative tool, now it is a communicative necessity. Much like the new technologies today, writing took a hold of society.
Chapter 2: Secondly, I chose an image of keeping fireflies in a jar. I chose this because it was a good representation of what I felt like Davis explained as "keeping the alchemist fire alive."  Societies have looked for ways to increase connection with the electricity for centuries. But, our fascination with light and electricity could stem from practically anything. Whether it be the stimuli of seeing something light up, the molecular level of tiny particles that is actually bigger than we could imagine, and more. Many children keep fireflies in jars, this is not safe for the lightning bugs, but is exemplary of our fascination with electricity in the simplest form. Fireflies produce natural light that represents particles like electrons bouncing around to produce more light, how quickly light moves and is produced. Although kids probably won't understand this concept, it is interesting to examine why one may capture fireflies. Also, the artifact represents how electricity is fascinating because it seems so simple, but encompasses our entire lives. A concept that seems mystic becomes real once again, energy is harnessed to produce a tool. Electricity is another example of how we interact with tools as a society and then they become second-nature to said society.
